Will Higher Rated Leaf Springs Last Longer on Coachmen Tandem Trailer With 3,500 Pound Axles

Updated 05/15/2023 | Published 05/13/2023

Question:

I have a Coachmen dual axle trailer with 3500 lb axles. I replaced my leaf springs a year ago and after returning from a trip this spring I noticed that the passenger side springs have flattened again. The trailer is not overloaded but we did hit some unexpected road imperfections at 65 mph. Would moving to a set of 2000 lb springs from 1750 lb springs help prevent this from happening again? Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Upgrading from 3,500 lb to 4,000 lb leaf springs will make them last longer. Eventually they will flatten since it is inevitable, but with the higher rating it won't happen as fast. Since you're looking to make a small increase this also means it won't have a drastic impact on your ride quality with your trailer.

Assuming you need a 26" replacement then the # e22YR will work for you. You have already replaced them once so you probably know this, but you want the replacement to match your current leaf spring length. That is the spring eye to spring eye measurement.

Something else you might want to consider is adding SumoSprings to your trailer. The fact that the passenger side has flattened out makes it sound like the weight from something like your slide out or kitchen is putting additional wear on that side. SumoSprings will provide additional support to your leaf springs and help level you out. You need the # TSS-107-40 if you have overslung axles (leaf springs sit over axle) or # TSS-106-40 for underslung axles (leaf springs sit under the axle). Since it is a tandem axle trailer you will need a pair for each axle.
