Tips For Removing a Rusted Interchangeable Ball from the Convert-A-Ball Ball Set # 900b

Published 02/11/2014

Question:

I got the pin out that goes through the ball with no problem , but cant get the ball off of the stem on a convert a ball hitch, to switch the ball size. The 2inch ball is stuck on with presumably being rusted on, thinking about 10 years. I have the receiver in a large vice but hate to put a big pipe wrench on the ball for fear of ruining it. I just asked a question a little bit ago. I said I have the receiver In the vise. That might be wrong terminology. I have the draw bar in the vice with the shank and ball still attached convert a ball, rated at 10,000 ponds, thats what is printed on the side of the base of of the shank that sits on the drawbar. The pin that goes through the ball and shank came out, but the ball is stuck to the shank. Is soaking in vinegar for a week an option? Heating ball with a torch? I also have a convert a ball 8,000 pounds ball and shank stuck together that is not on a drawbar. How I get these apart? Any help be appreciated, thanks.

If I were you I think the first thing I would try is soaking the assembly in gear oil overnight or longer. Letting the oil penetrate for an extended period of time really should loosen it up.

A torch or soaking in vinegar are options as well. I think I would try the oil first, then the torch if it is still being stubborn.

You might use a hammer or rubber mallet on the ball to apply some force to break it free. This can work on either set you have. You would want to put the shank or the draw bar in a vise first.
