Question:
I have had trouble with oil leaks from the treads of other installed relocation oil filter kits. I plan on using a thread sealant but I can find no answer on the torque of the attachment threads into the soft aluminum adapters. Some say to apply the thread sealant and the make them hand tight. Others say apply the sealant and make them hand tight then turn the treads an additional 1/4 of turn. What is your suggestion?

I spoke with my contact at Derale and they provided some very useful information. They said you do not want to use a liquid sealant of any type because it acts as a lubricant when first applied and would actually allow you to over tighten the fittings causing leaks. They suggest using a thread tape and tightening to approximately 8 to 10 ft lbs. Although the suggestion to hand tighten and then turn an additional 1/4 turn may work, the term hand tighten would be different for everyone.
