Question:

Our Maxxfan-smoke 4951KS is popping when when try to open the unit. The fans dont turn on and the lid doesnt lift. There is also grease on the manual knob. Is this a Lift Motor or Operator Mechanism issue? Or possibly something else? The serial number is 2016-12-A4951kS-A04222.

The two most likely causes of a MaxxAir vent fan lid not opening or closing are either going to be a lift motor or operator failure. I recommend removing the motor and applying power directly to this to see if the shaft turns. If not, you know the motor is bad and needs to be replaced for which we have the Replacement Lift Motor for Maxx Fan Plus Roof Vent part # MA10-20270. If the motor works properly then it's most likely a bad operator for which we have the Replacement Operator Mechanism part # MA10-20281K-1AF.

If you're hearing a popping sound that would lead me to believe the motor still works so it really sounds like a bad operator but it doesn't hurt to do further testing like what I mentioned above.
