Choosing Malone MegaSport or Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer for Hobie Tandem Island

Question:
I’m considering the Malone Megasort vs. the Yakima Rack and Roll 78 for a Hobie Tandem Island. Given 18’6” length for the Hobie TI, it seems that this would be better suited in terms of overall length, bar spread and carrying capacity. I like the Rack and Roll for compact storage and for versatility of bar spread, but the overall length seems short for the TI and I gather would require the upgraded shocks for weight. Any experience with one or the other for this purpose, especially when mounting and using the Hobie TI cradles?

You will need the Malone MegaSport Kayak Trailer # MPG535 for your Hobie Tandem Island. The Yakima # Y08107 has the capability of handling the weight of the boat, and can be extended to handle the length with the # Y08109. What it doesn't have is the required crossbar spread.
The Hobie cradles require 67" spacing on center for installation. The Rack and Roll only has a 48" maximum crossbar spread so you won't be able to mount the cradles.
The Malone MegaSport has a crossbar spread of 68", so you will be able to mount the cradles on the trailer. Since the MegaSport can handle boats up to 20' long and hold 500 lbs on the crossbars, no additional upgrades would be necessary for it to carry your Hobie Tandem Island.
