Weight Distribution Hitch For A 2007 Starcraft Hybrid Trailer

Updated 08/24/2022 | Published 08/23/2022

Question:

Our 2007 Starcraft hybrid 21SB 3400lbs dry weight is quite a handful towing behind 2022 Ford Ranger with tow package It pulls fine but truck pushes side to side on highway. We do try to load the weight towards front of camper, and do not notice any sagging at the hitch. I used the bathroom scale method to calculate hitch weight. Weight was about 230lbs x 3 = 690lbs HW. That did not include anything behind axle of tow vehicle but had sample load in the trailer. Will assume another 100 lbs would be behind axle in truck bed. What do you recommend for a WD/Sway Control setup? Receiver is 2, ball is 2 5/16. Trailer has electric brakes. I also need the shank. Is there a negative effect if the WD setup is rated too high or low?

When it comes to choosing the correct weight distribution hitch you need to make sure you're as close as possible to the loaded tongue weight of your trailer. If you are higher or lower then the loaded weight then it cause even more sway on your trailer then not using one at all. The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37100ET is a little over kill for what you're trying to do.

The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA94-00-0800 will be closer to what you need. This system has no-drill, clamp on brackets that can be adjusted along the trailer. The system has steel-on-steel friction which helps minimize sway caused by winds, curvy roads or sudden maneuvers. It has a dipped steel construction which makes it durable and corrosion resistant.

The Fastway hitch has a tongue weight between 600 pounds to 1,000 pounds. The shank and 2-5/16 inch hitch ball is included. The 1-7/8 inch thin walled socked # EQ70-00-4800 is recommended for hitch ball installation.
