There isn't a hitch made that won't interfere somewhat with the functionality of the hands free liftgate sensor. However, the Curt Trailer Hitch item # C99FR will cause the least amount of interference from the available hitches. What we have found out from testing after the hitch is installed is you will need to kick to the left or right of the receiver to find an area where the sensor is not blocked.

The reason I chose the C99FR over the other options is that only the receiver portion of the hitch is visible. This hitch is custom fit and bolts directly to your Highlander with included hardware.

If you need a wiring harness to control your trailer's lighting functions I recommend the Curt Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector item # C76CR. This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the trim panel near the driver's side rear seat belt bracket.

To round out your towing setup I recommend the Curt Towing Starter Kit for 2" Hitches item # C45534. This towing kit will provide you with a 2" ball and a fixed ball mount with a 3/4" rise and 2" drop. It also includes a hitch pin and clip, hitch receiver lock with keys, hitch cover, and a storage case.
