Troubleshooting Sway With Blue Ox Weight Distribution Hitch With 3 Dots On Spring Bars

Updated 05/17/2022 | Published 05/16/2022

Question:

I bought a travel trailer and it came with a Blue ox weight distribution hitch 3 dots on spring bar. I have been experiencing a lot of sway when pulling the camper. The camper has a hitch weight of 427 lb and UVW is 5295lb. Are the springs I am using to strong and transferring to much weight off the rear axle thereby causing the sway problem?

Based on the information you have given me it sounds like you have the Replacement Spring Bars for Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution System - 1,000 lbs TW # BXW4007 on your current system which are rated for 750-1,000 lbs of tongue weight. This would mean that your current setup is potentially overrated. An overrated system can cause a rigid ride and a bouncy trailer, which may be partially or completely responsible for what you're experiencing.

I say potentially overrated since it sounds like you're giving my your unloaded tongue weight at 427 lbs. It is important to use your loaded tongue weight when determining the capacity your WDH should have. Your tongue weight is typically 10-15% of your loaded trailer weight but it is always best to measure and find out exactly using a scale like the # e99044.

If you have a tongue weight that is in the 550-750 lb range then you would need the # BXW4006. For 350-550 lbs of tongue weight you need the # BXW4005. If you have a system other than the SwayPro please feel free to reach out and let me know since you would need different bars assuming they are available.
