Hitch Extender For Thule Transporter Cargo Carrier To Clear Doors On Airstream Class B RV Motorhome

Published 04/09/2022

Question:

Im buying a new Airstream 24GT and when mounted on a Mercedes Sprinter chassis. When tilting the Thule Combi Hitch Carrier # TH66C back can you open the rear doors on the Sprinter? I dont think so, but thought I would ask. The other question is can it be modified so it could be moved back a few inches so it would clear the doors. Its not a problem as far as weight being moved back a few as the Sprinter is a one ton and the weight woundnt be a problem. Not sure if the mounting of the unit would stand being moved back a few inches. Maybe it could be strengthened to handle the extra weight? Thanks for reply. I like this unit and it would work great for us. Thank you

If you use a hitch extension like the MaxxTow Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter # MT70033 that will move your Thule Transporter Combi Hitch Mounted Enclosed Cargo Carrier TH665C back 11", it will reduce the hitch capacity rating by 50%. Since the carrier only weighs 55lbs and the cargo capacity is 150lbs this should not be an issue, but be sure to verify with the hitch installed on your Airstream 24 GT.

A better option may be the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender # Y02483. This will allow you to swing your Thule cargo carrier out of the way to make loading items and getting in and out of the back easier with the box swung out of the way. The BackSwing can support up to 250lbs which you are well under with the weight of box and cargo.
