Parts Needed to Install Valley Odyssey Brake Controller, Part # 52810 on a 2002 Toyota Tacoma

Updated 09/17/2009 | Published 09/15/2009

Question:

I have a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4wd pickup. It is wired for a utility trailerflat 4 prongand has a 2 receiver hitch and I installed both.I plan to pull a travel trailer tandem wheels and the weight is about 4800 lbs.. I believe I need Part# 52810-V3,#ETBC7 and #118379. Part #118379 is to replace the one I bought from you guys 2 or 3 years ago. Should it last longer than that? What do you suggest on any of the above?? The only reason I picked above brake controller is because your write up said it is the easiest to install??? Do you know if my vehicle is prewired for the brake controller or 7 prong connector? I am somewhat handy but have never installed a brake controller. Should I pay to have it done by the pros or go for it? Any suggestions are appreciated? I already have the truck, trailer, hitch and ball part along with existing wiring for utility trailer. I plan to order from you once I am clear on what is needed.

You have hit the nail on the head regarding the necessary equipment.

Getting 2 to 3 years out of a wiring harness is not unheard if. As with all electronics, they have a limited lifespan. You will want to examine the wiring on the trailer you pulled before, to check for pinched or broken wires that might have shorted out to the trailer frame and fried the converter box.

Unfortunately, your Tacoma is not prewired for the 7-way connector or the brake controller. The good news is that if you are fairly handy, you should have no problem saving some money and installing the controller yourself.

Our website offers some great resources to assist you with your installation, and technical assistance is included with your purchase.

I will include a link to our Brake Controller Installation Guide which will help walk you through the installation. I will also include a link to the product demonstration video for the # ETBC7 Install Kit, and an installation video showing the Install Kit being used on a 2009 Honda Odyssey. Your vehicle is obviously different, but the procedure would be similar, and you will be able to watch the video and determine if this installation is something you would be comfortable attempting.
