In order to install a disc brake conversion on your boat trailer, you need to know the trailer's axle type. It does not matter if you have a single axle or tandem axle boat trailer, but some options will only work with specific axle types.

The hydraulic disc brake option will use a surge coupler. With this option, the brakes activate when the actuator is compressed on your hitch . When your tow vehicle slows your trailer will push against the actuator, activating the brakes. There is a delay between when your tow vehicle brakes and when your surge brakes are activated. You will have to lock out your surge actuator whenever you need to back up your trailer, exiting the vehicle is usually required whenever this occurs.

If you go with the electric over hydraulic brake option, you will need a brake controller in your towed vehicle/trailer. You will get a better braking response with this setup than you would with a surge actuator setup. The brake controller will allow you to adjust the amount of power being applied to your towed vehicle/trailer brakes.

I have included two weblinks explaining everything you will need for each of this conversions below.
