You will want to check for power going into your Wall Controller # FR48NR by removing it from the wall and testing the wires with a Circuit Tester # PTW2992 that shows you battery voltage or by using a Multimeter # PT89ZR. Both wires will be blue and polarity doesn't matter you just need to identify if you are getting 12 volts of power to the controller and have a good ground. Be sure that the power switch on the outside portion of the water heater is switched on. If you have power at the wiring your controller is bad and needs replaced.

If you do not have 12 volts of power you will need to check the back of the water heater. There you will find both the 12 volt input wires(white and black) as well as the wall controller(blue wires). You can use the tester to check both sets of these wires as well to ensure that you do have 12 volts of power going to the unit(black wire) and a good ground(white wire). Also by testing the blue wires at the water heater this will let you know if the wiring is damaged that goes to your controller.

Hello, How do I remove this from the wall? No access behind it. Tried twisting but it seems stuck. I don’t want to twist to hard and break something. Is this the correct way to take it off? We have been having E1 errors for over a month. Now suddenly the controller has no power but the hot water is still working. Thank you

@Jess The thermostat controller spins off the base which is attached to the wall.

@JamesonC I have no power going to my wall controller. I’ve verified I have 12v to the heater. I’ve verified that power made it to the circuit board. I can’t receive any power coming from the blue remote wires, even at the posts coming off the circuit board. I’ve made sure the ground is good at the circuit board. Is there anything else that I may be missing?

@D I think you've successfully troubleshooted the problem to being the circuit board of the unit. I wish that was a part we offered as a replacement part but it's not.
