Question:
I have an old Nash 16t travel trailer with two 2800 pound axles and four 1400 pound springs. The axles never support more than 4000 pounds, usually less, and it rides pretty roughly. Any problem with replacing the 1400 pound springs with 1000 pound springs as long as there is never more than 4000 pounds the axles are supporting? Does the spring rating mean as long as it is not exceeded there should be no problems, or if you operate right at the rating will the springs fail prematurely? The goal is to get the best ride possible without risk of damaging or breaking the springs.

As long as you for sure will never exceed 4,000 lbs of total trailer weight you could drop down to a lower capacity leaf spring for a 2,000 lb axle. For that we have the part # 072-017-00 which is 21 inches long or part # e84SR for 20-3/8 inches.
Or another option you could go with is adding a shock kit to the axles like with the part # LC281255. This will do a great job smoothing out the ride quality as it would slow down the movement of the suspension. This fits 2-3/8 inch diameter axles. If you happened to have 3 inch axles instead you'd need the part # LC281281.
