How To Upgrade Tires On Harbor Freight 1720 Trailer For Higher Speed Rating

Published 08/12/2021

Question:

I’m looking into getting a harbor freight trailer 1720 Lb. Capacity 48 In. X 96 In. Super Duty Folding Trailer and want to replace the wheels and tires with ones that have a higher speed rating so I can use it on the highway. Is it necessary to replace the axle as well?

In order to obtain a speed rating higher than 65 mph which is the standard you'll have to upgrade to a 13" wheel and tire combo. I recommend the Provider ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # TA43RR which is rated for 81 mph. It measures 24" diameter x 7" wide which is larger than the 5.30x12 that come with so you'll need to measure to be sure you have at least 3" from the fender and 1" from the frame for the new size.
