Will Using Roadmaster RM-195125 Spare Tire Carrier Allow Hatch of 2019 Doge Grand Caravan to Open
Updated 07/29/2021 | Published 07/28/2021 >
Question:
We have a 2019 caravan. Specific spares for these vehicles have been discontinued so getting a full size tire is the option I have. I would like to know if this set up would be far enough back that it would work on the van in regards when it is-released from set position and falls to side at ground level , if there would be enough clearance to open the rear gate. We will also be carrying bicycles. Picture shows current set up

I don't have vehicle specific information that would allow me to definitively say that the carrier would allow the rear hatch to open fully, but I can certainly help you figure it out.
To determine if you'll have clearance, you'll need to do some measurements. The stock tire size for the 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan was 225/65-17, which would have a diameter of about 28-1/2 inches. So, the top of the tire would sit at 28-1/2 inches above the ground, when the tire is pivoted to the side. The closest edge of the tire would be about 12-3/4 inches rearward of the hitch pin hole.
So, if you measure 28-1/2 inches above the ground and about 12-3/4 inches rearward of the hitch pin hole, you'll have a very good idea of where the tire would sit when lowered. Have a helper hold a broomstick or yardstick at that height, and that distance rearward from the hitch pin hole, and you'll be able to see if the hatch will clear that point.
Be aware that the carrier is only meant for hitch mounted accessories and flat towing a vehicle. It's not meant or designed for towing a trailer. Using the # RM-195125 Spare Tire Carrier will reduce the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 1/3, so you'll want to ensure that the weight of your rack and the bikes carried on it doesn't exceed 2/3 of the hitch tongue weight capacity.
