Do You Have To Re-Setup Weight Distribution Hitch When Using A New Tow Vehicle?
Updated 05/04/2021 | Published 05/01/2021 >
Question:
I have a 2008 model WDH which I bought from the PO of my 2008 Puma travel trailer in 2010. I used it with my 2007 Dodge Ram for over 26,000 miles just under my vehicles GCWR with very positive results. I never actually measured my weight by axles, but it drove well at 55-60 mph. I upgraded some new furniture in the trailer, and that put me over my GCWR by 400 lbs. so this spring I purchased a newer F-150 with a much higher GCWR. Took it on my first shakedowninch cruise this past week. I did take the rig to a CAT scale for axle weights with WDH and got Weights under my GAWR for both axles, but my steering was lighter than I was used to with the old RAM. I am 3,260 lbs. under my GCWR so I figure my WDH is not doing the job it needs to do. I do not have any printed directions on how to set up my system, I would like to consult with someone on either how to set up my current system better or replace it with better technology, if its design is an issue.

The system you have should do a great job for your trailer, and since it was working correctly on your previous truck it more than likely needs to be adjusted to your new truck to get it back to performing correct.
Based on the pictures it looks like you have the Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System with Shank - Trunnion Bar - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW # C17332, so I have included the written instructions for you to look at to help you get the system adjusted correctly.
For the most port you will adjust which link you are using on the lift brackets to adjust the tension on the spring bars. From the picture you provided it looks like the spring bar is up a bit high, but you will want to play around with it to find the exact setting your truck likes.
I also went ahead and included a video review of the # C17332 for you to take a look at.
