Recommended Brake Controller Solution for Towing Trailer with Multiple Vehicles

Published 02/21/2021

Question:

Hello, I have a question that is out of my knowledge base. I have a 2012 Ford Escape V6 that is rated at 3500lbs towing with current tow package. It only has a 4-pin connector. I am buying a 2018 Sol Luna well under the 3500lbs, but I need a 7-pin set up. I see brake controllers that go in the cab, wireless that mount to the trailer...what do you recommend? We may need a set up for another vehicle, too, but not sure right now. 2013 Santa Fe Sport 2.0 What would you do if it were yours? Thank you!

If you're going to be towing your 2018 Sol Luna trailer with multiple vehicles then I recommend using the Curt Echo Mobile # C51180 since it's going to simply plug into your 7 way connector and is controlled by any smart phone running Android 4.4 or newer, or iOS 8.0 or newer. The Curt Echo also doesn't require any wiring into the tow vehicles, so it's a great solution for vehicles that won't have plug and play harnesses in the cabin of the vehicle that would otherwise make installation of a brake controller easier.

In order to use the Curt Echo # C51180 on your 2012 Ford Escape with a 4 way you'll just need to install the # ETBC7L, which will use your existing 4 way and give you the 7 way you need for your trailer. If your 2013 Santa Fe Sport already has a 4 way on it as well, you can use an # ETBC7L kit on that as well. If you don't have the 4 way connector on that you'll want to use the Curt # C56184 to install a 4 way first, then install the # ETBC7L.

I've linked some review videos of these parts for you to have a look at, but I believe the Curt Echo is going to be your best solution for a brake controller and it's what I would do if I was in the same situation.
