Recommended Axle For 4x8 Tear Drop Camper Project

I am nearing retirement and wanted to start a 4x8 tear camper project. Just taking my time with no time constraints. Any recommendations on the size and load capacity of your axles for such a project? What is the standard? I will be doing some off road trips also.

That sounds like a fun project!
Typically 4'x8' trailers have a 2000lb or 2200lb axle so I recommend going with the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension - Straight Spindle - Regular Tires - 2,000 lbs # ASR2KHDS01 since you will not need to worry about finding the correct length axle, and since this option has a built in AEON progressive rate spring meaning you will not have to use leaf springs as all of the suspension components will be built in. The Heavy-Duty means that the # ASR2KHDS01 is made from thicker more robust steel than the standard models, and is a great option since you are planning on doing some off-road trips.
Since you mentioned doing some off-roading you may be interested in the # ASR2KHDS04 instead which has a 4" lift built in for extra ground clearance, or the # ASR2KHDS03 which has the same 4" lift but the spindles are further away from the frame allowing you to fit wider tires.
It is a good idea to add a piece of 2" square tubing between the two axle-less systems for extra support, and then all you will need to do is use three bolts on each side to bolt them to the frame of your trailer.
For hubs you would need the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 3,500-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 # 84545UC1-EZ which will allow you to use 13"-15" wheels.
