According to Roadmaster, the XL Base Plate Kit, # 4427-1A, will fit on your 2013 Ford Explorer Sport with the twin turbo eco-boost engine.
If you are planning to flat tow your Ford Explorer, I would first recommend checking your owners manual for any restrictions or limitations on flat towing your vehicle.
If you determine that you are able to flat tow your vehicle, you will need a few other items as well such as a tow bar, safety chains, tow bar wiring and a supplemental braking system.
For a tow bar, I would recommend checking out the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar, # RM-520. This is one of our most popular tow bars and is rated for up to 6,000 lbs. For safety cables, I recommend # RM-643.
The next item you will need is a tow bar wiring kit. This will provide tail lights for the tow vehicle when you are driving. If you do not plan on traveling very often, I would recommend the Deluxe Magnetic Tow Lights, # RM-2100. These lights simply attach to the vehicle using magnets and are very easy to remove and install.
If you will be traveling frequently, I would recommend a more permanent installation such as the Roadmaster Diode Wiring Kit, # 154-792-118158. This kit wires into your vehicles tail light circuits and uses the vehicle tail lights. I have attached the installation instructions for you to check out.
The last item that you will need is a supplemental braking system. Most states now require the use of a supplemental braking system when towing. For your vehicle, I would recommend the Roadmaster InvisiBrake, # RM-8700. Once this system is installed, you no longer have to worry about setting up a bulky braking system each time you want to tow your vehicle. Simply plug in the electrical connectors, safety chains and tow bar and you are ready to go.
