Question:
I am replacing the axle on my 5x8 trailer. The existing axle is underslung and is installed without a spring seat. I am having trouble removing the existing axle from the leaf springs. Is it possible that the center bolt for the leaf spring thread directly into the square axle tube? At the very least, the square axle tube would have to have a hole in it to accommodate the leaf spring through bolt. I was hoping to reuse the leaf springs, but if I cant get the axle to separate, I may need to replace the whole suspension, including the leaf springs.

On square axles, there is traditionally a hole that the leaf spring has a nub that fits in to act as that securing point that a spring seat on round axles would and then the u-bolts secure the axle to the springs. You can see this on the CE Smith Trailer Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Standard Spindles - Galvanized - 57-1/2" Long - 1.8K # CE33201GA and photos on part # CE23102. There is often a need once the u-bolts are removed to use direct downward force or even a pry bar to separate the springs from the square axle. You can do this without damaging the springs.
I have never seen the bolt go all the way through the springs and axle, so if that is what they did on your axle, then I recommend replacing the springs as well.
