Comparing Leaf Spring Axles, Torsion Axles, Dexter and Hayes/AL-KO
Updated 12/10/2012 | Published 12/08/2012 >
Question:
Haynes vs Dexter? Or are they both good axles? Thinking about buying 22foot split tilt trailer #14000 lbs. Most of these trailers use torsion axles, I believe it is a clearance issue. I not sure about torsion axles have mixed feelings. Should I be concerned? I know Dexter uses four rubber cords and Haynes uses three cords? Never used torsion axles before!

I personally would not have any reservations about using a torsion axle. Dexter is a leader in the industry but Hayes/AL-KO are quality as well. It seems to be easier to get parts for Dexter axles and they tend to cost less.
On a torsion axle you will want to be cautious not to overload it (of course this goes with leaf spring axles too). The suspension components on leaf spring axles are easier to replace as well but a torsion axle is going to give you good performance provided you keep up with the maintenance, which again is true no matter the axle design.
On tilt trailers like you are looking at, a torsion axle is used so that the trailer manufacturer can achieve the proper degree of tilt and it better for this type of application than a leaf spring axle.
