Triple Axle 5th Wheel Trailer Has Center Axle Forward and Backward Movement

Updated 11/02/2012 | Published 11/01/2012

Question:

HI... i have purchased a used 5th wheel trailer and it has a suspension similiar to Your Part # APTT5 My trailer has brakes and shocks on each wheel.. The issue that I have is that the center wheel moves back and forth in certain situations depending on if I am backing up or going forward , applying brakes etc.. the tires at times are very near touching.. by looking at your Part # APTT5 drawing it seems to me that there is nothing from stopping the center wheel from moving as it does..everything underneath the 5th trailer looks to be in good condition ...however I cannot check the shocks, wheel bearings ...tire pressure all good . Could this be normal movement and is just that I did not notice it before ? Any help you could give me would be appreciated.

Some movement is normal. This is because there are two pivot points, one at the second hanger and one at the third hanger which are on either side of the center axle. What you will want to do is check several things to determine if there is wear that is causing excessive movement.

Check the shackle straps, equalizers, and hangers to see if the holes have elongated. If so they will need to be replaced. Also make sure the u-bolts are tight and in the correct position and that the nub on the spring stack is seated in the hole in the center of the spring seat.

If you are not certain it would be a good idea to have a trailer shop or trusted mechanic inspect the suspension to determine if everything is in good working order.
