I am looking at a Dutton Lainson DL14730 winch for my boat. Is the Dutton Lainson DL6456 Drive Drill Socket Adapter compatible with this winch?

The Dutton-Lainson # DL6456 Drill Drive Socket Adapter is only compatible with DLB series brake winches, so it wouldn't work with the # DL14730 winch you'd mentioned.
Dutton-Lainson offers a 2500 lb capacity winch as part # DL15761 which is closest in capacity to the 2K winch you were looking at, which is compatible with the socket adapter. The nice thing about a brake winch is it automatically applies the brake when you stop cranking the handle but with the flip of a lever, you can play out the cable.
The 5/16 x 25 foot cable/hook is sold separately as part # DL24102.
