Is Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch With Strap Good Option for Boat

Updated 07/30/2020 | Published 07/29/2020

Question:

Hi folks…glad to find you have Made in the USA products for me to choose from. I am trying to a manually operated winch for my trailered 1986 Whaler Montauk. I am thinking 2 speeds would be good in case I encounter a steep ramp and my trailer is a combo of rollers and bunks. It will also be used in both salt and fresh water here in Washington State. So…I was thinking about the Dutton Lainson line of winches, maybe the 14830. For some reason I seem to think straps are better than rope but prove me wrong with your thoughts. Boat should be about 1,500 lbs w/motor and gear. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and recommendations.

For a 1,500 lb boat you have made a really good choice with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14830.

This is a 2,500 lb winch which will be plenty for your boat, and its hand brake is going to be really useful if you come up against a steeper ramp. The TUFFPLATE finish of the Dutton-Lainson winches is also going to be a boon for you since you are going to be in saltwater and freshwater because it has an extra layer of coating which makes it resist corrosion better than the standard zinc plating on many winches.

You will also need a strap for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14830.

The correct one is the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook # DL24249.

A lot of people like strap more than cable such as # DL24102 because strap has more give but either will work just fine, it's mostly personal preference.
