Question:
The adjustable receiver assembly is rated for 350 Lbs tongue weight if towing a trailer under 3500 Lbs. I plan to mount a removable carrier into the receiver that measures approximately 24inch deep from the outside edge of the receiver. This includes the approximately 9 3/16inch from the centerline of the crossbar portion of the assembly. With 120 Lbs on the carrier plus 30 Lbs for the carrier itself, it appears there might be almost 300 Lb/Ft of torque on the horizontal crossbar of the assembly. Will the unit hold this? I know it is recommended to strapfoot the load to a point on the rear of the trailer for additional support but my options are limited, except for perhaps attaching a bracket behind the spare tire, which is mounted on the rear external wall of the trailer? However, all this is static load. Considering the up and down motion of the rear of a travel trailer, might I be looking at maybe twice the torque? So, would eTrailer recommend using the 13703 to carry the load Im planning to carry?

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs, 22" to 72" Wide # 13703 is a great hitch. You are correct that having a cargo carrier attached to that hitch will have more movement than you'd have on a vehicle because of the axle position and weight. This hitch is rated for up to 350 lbs tongue weight which will include the weight of the carrier used.
I recommend using a carrier like # C18150. Then use a hitch lock and stabilizer like # 63232 and a stability strap like # 18050 to your spare tire or bumper.
