Flat Towing Base Plates and Wiring for 2002 Honda CR-V

Updated 01/30/2020 | Published 01/22/2020

Question:

I now use a 2004 Jeep to flat tow with the Blue ox towing system . I am considering changing to a 2002 Honda CR-v 2 wd . Is this Honda capable of being flat towed and how does it work? I will need the base plate that attaches to the front of the Honda and also the lighting kit minus the coil electrical cable since I already have one off my Jeep. I also need a rear Hitch for the Honda as well. Thank You

From what I was able to find in my research, the 2002 Honda CR-V can be flat towed. I would recommend checking your copy of the owner's manual to verify this.

It sounds like you've already got a Blue Ox tow bar, so you're going to be best served by using Blue Ox base plates like the Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms # BX2232; this just means you won't need to use an adapter to connect to the tow bar as you would if using a different manufacturer's base plates with your tow bar.

For wiring, they don't make a version of the Roadmaster # RM-15267 (that it sounds like you're using on your 2004 Jeep Wrangler TJ) without the coiled wire included, but that same kit can be used on your 2002 Honda CR-V to allow you to have functioning lights while flat towing. This is the way I recommend connecting the lights to your motorhome.

I've linked videos of the installation of the base plates and the wiring kit for you to have a look at if you're going to be installing these yourself.

I need a set up to flat tow a 2002 Honda CR-V 4WD. I now use the Blue Ox, but will be selling it with my Jeep. Do you recommend the Blue Ox or another towing system?

The Blue Ox Base Plates for your 2002 Honda CR-V are going to be a great choice. There's a Blue Ox tow bar that pairs great with the base plates we have available and it's going to include the safety cables. We have a great expert answer that I will link you to that will show all the parts that you will need to flat tow your 2002 Honda CR-V. The only thing that I would change from what the expert recommends is the diode wiring. He recommends the bulb and socket kit. These are a pain to install and it requires drilling hole in the back of your taillights. The kit I would recommend is # RM-15267. This kit is going to utilize your factory lights and allow them to receive the proper functions from the motorhome.
