Question:
Hello! I would like to purchase a trailer hitch for my 2007 Toyota Matrix XR, and I noticed the highest rating available is class 2 with a 250 lb tongue weight rating. I am planning on mounting a 1-1/4 inch dirt bike carrier on the hitch that weighs about 35 lbs, and transporting a 240 lb dirt bike, for a total tongue weight of 275 lbs. Would this be way too much weight for this setup, or would I be able to manage at speeds at or below 45 mph? If I were to get the weight of the bike down by draining the tank, taking off the seat, etc to get it down to 250 lbs total, would this be manageable? Thank you for your help!

Like you mentioned, the highest tongue weight rating for a trailer hitch on your 2007 Toyota Matrix XR is the 250 lbs of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12221. I can't recommend going over that amount at all, even at lower speeds, as it is not rated for or tested for more than 250 lbs and exceeding that will not only put undue stress on the hitch, but also void the warranty.
So you will definitely want to stay at or below the 250 lb limit to ensure you can safely get to your destination with your dirt bike. One thing I do recommend is using the Curt Cam Buckle Stabilizing Strap for Hitch-Mounted Accessories # 18050 to keep your dirt bike and carrier perfectly stable in the hitch.
I've added links to video reviews for you to check out as well.
