I have a 1984 16foot utility trailer. The hub has markings on it that read Dexter 8-248 and the bolts are measuring 2 15/16. Is this a 5 on 5 bolt hole pattern?

Make sure you are measuring from wheel stud center to wheel stud center when trying to determine the bolt pattern. The measurement you mentioned doesn't really match but it's very close to 3 inch which would be 5 on 5 inch. The correct idler hub to replace your Dexter 8-248 and has a 5 on 5 inch bolt pattern is # AKIHUB-550-35-K.
