Why is Weight Capacity of Trailer Hitch Different Than Towing Weight for 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe

Updated 09/03/2019 | Published 09/01/2019

Question:

I noticed that on my 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS, it has a towing weight capacity of 1,650 lbs but the towing weight of part #75471 is 3,500 lbs. Is this the right part for my car?

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75471 is a fit for your 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe and is the trailer hitch I'd recommend because of how clean it looks installed and it has the tab for a wiring connector bracket.

Trailer hitch manufacturers test the strength of their products separate from the towing capacity of the vehicle. So while the Draw-Tite trailer hitch has been tested and approved for up to a 3,500 lb trailer and 525 lbs of tongue weight, since your Santa Fe has a lower towing capacity that is the weight you need to stay under since it is the limiting factor.

For a trailer wiring connector, like what I mentioned above, I recommend the T-One # 118258 if you have the factory tow package or the T-One # 118415 if you don't have the factory tow package because we have found the Tekonsha wiring to be the most reliable. You can mount this to that tab using the bracket # 18144.

To complete a towing setup you also need a ball mount kit. I recommend checking out Ball Mount Kit # 989900 because it includes two ball mounts, one with a 3/4” rise/2” drop and the other with a 2-3/4” rise/4” drop, a 1-7/8” hitch ball, a 2” hitch ball, and a pin and clip. You will want to refer to the attached ball mount article to ensure that this kit is correct for your towing application.
