Recommended Wiring and Brake Controller for 2017 Audi Q5 with Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

Updated 07/29/2019 | Published 07/27/2019

Question:

I will need the highest receiver hieght possible for my 2017 Audi Q5 so prefer this hitch to the Curt. Installation looks beyond my ability so would need a good Installer in the San Diego, Ca. area. Can you provide me with a good one or a list for the area. Also preferred brake controller, and electrical needed or this car and hitch.

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75940 is a great choice for your 2017 Audi Q5. We don't have any specific places that we recommend for installation so we tend to recommend looking for a place that you trust or that has a good reputation to perform the installation.

Then for wiring I recommend the Tekonsha ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness # 119250KIT because it not only protects your OEM wiring but it also is a "Zero Contact Installation" which means you don't have to splice into your wiring.

For a brake controller I recommend the Curt Echo # C51180 because it syncs to your Apple or Android smart device via Bluetooth so you don't have to modify anything in your Q5 for the controller. When you are done towing the Echo is small enough that you can keep it in your glove box for safekeeping.

To add the wiring for the Echo you need the Upgrade Kit # ETBC7L. This simply connects to the 4-Way from the ZCI kit and then just requires the black wire to be routed to the battery on your Q5. To secure this connector at the back of the vehicle you'll need something unconventional like the Eclipse Magnetic Mounting Brackets # 306-X6020 and # 306-X6019. I'm a little unsure of how you would be able to do this though as the hitch is designed to be hidden.

You also need a ball mount kit like part # 989900 to complete your towing setup. I have attached a helpful article and a link to our selection of ball mounts for you to filter through to ensure you get the correct one for your application.
