Replacement Motor for Kwikee 28 Series Step Made In 1988

Updated 07/31/2025 | Published 06/17/2019

Question:

I have a 1988 National Dolphin class a model 3400 that I just bought. The Kwikee step was stuck in the open position. I removed the clevis pin and lubed the movable areas and was able to push the step back in. I removed the motor and hooked up a 12 volt battery to it and it makes a clicking noise but does not turn. I reversed the polarity and still just clicks. Can you tell me what the part number is for the replacement motor and the gear box also. Not sure yet if I need the gear box or a new control module.

The issue you are having with your Kwikee 28 Series Step is a bad motor. I do have an option for you but the cutoff date for replacement parts on Kwikee Steps is 1999. Therefore, they do not make a replacement motor that will work with your Kwikee Step due to its age. The only option you have is a full replacement, the Kwikee 28 Series Electric Step part # LC3747451.

If you want to switch to a more cost effective manual pull-out step you can use the Lippert Manual Pull-Out Step part # LC432678 instead which fits a 25-3/4" wide mounting bracket.

I have a 2006 Winnebago Outlook Class C with the kwikee 28 series step. It is currently having problems. The step extends normally but when the step is fully retracted the motor continues to run with a chattering sound for exactly 5 seconds and then stops. Also, the step will not retract when the motorhome is started with the step extended. Lastly, my understanding is that there is a safety feature that the step will stop extending if it encounters an obstacle. This feature is also not working. Do you have an idea if a bad control unit would be causing these symptoms? Would the Lippert LC432678 manual step be a direct replacement for the series 28 with the same bolt hole pattern. Thanks for your advice. Peter Anderson

@PeterA If the motor continues to run after the step has extended or retracted and chatters then this usually means it's not arcing out enough to send the signal to the control module to tell it to stop. Therefore, the motor will need to be replaced for which we have the Kwikee Electric RV Steps part # LC379608. I would first start with a new motor and see if that takes care of everything.

@PeterA That is not an exact replacement but it could work. It is a little wider so you'd need additional clearance around outside of it.
