Question:
Do you pack grease back in the dust caps ?
asked by: Morris
Expert Reply:
When you re-pack a hub with fresh wheel bearing grease you do not need to also pack grease into the interior of the standard grease cap like # RG04-020. If you packed the bearings by hand or used a packing tool like # ALL647646 the bearings themselves will have a good amount of bearing grease and there would be no way for any grease put into the grease caps to get into the bearings.
This is why there are Bearing Buddy grease caps like # BB1980A-SS that have a zerk grease fitting with a spring loaded mechanism that pushes grease into the bearings. You use a grease gun and grease like # L30100 and # L54FR. to fill the Bearing Buddy caps and these allow you to have a on-board grease reserve that will automatically move into the bearings as needed. The spring pressure pushes grease in when there is space for it.
The grease cap part # RG04-020 has a 1.988-inch outside diameter and to replace this with a Bearing Buddy you will use part # BB1980A-SS for stainless steel or part # BB1980A for chrome.
