How could you secure the pad to the truck when you are away on your ride.

I recommend using a cable lock like the 10' Cable Lock # e98891 to secure the Thule GateMate Pro Tailgate Pad # TH823PRO while you are out on your ride. The 10' length should be enough for you to thread the cable through the opening for the tailgate handle on the GateMate Pro and then down the inside portion of your handle over to a tie-down hook.
If you plan on using the GateMate Pro often and would like a cable lock that you don't have to keep track of then I recommend the ToyLok Stake Pocket Mounted Retractable Cable Lock # LC337120-337112. This retractable cable comes with a mounting bracket for your truck bed stake pocket so you would just use the same method described earlier (be sure to still run it through the tie-down hook).
