Question:
I recently installed the Drawtite Ultra Frame hitch #41946 under 2017 GMC Savana 2500, and am having issues with the hooks on the safety chains/cables for trailers fitting the hook loops on this hitch. My 6x10foot cargo trailer chains fit, but I have to be sure to hook them, and then swing them vertically to let the safety catch snap shut. On my Brimar 6x12foot 10k lb rated dump, I have the original safety cables, and the hooks slide on, but dont rotate and there is no way to allow the catches to close. All this just to ask, can you recommend the appropriate size safety hook diameter to use with this hitch? Im not too concerned with the smaller trailer, since I can properly secure the chain hooks, but Id prefer to change at least the hooks on the cables at a minimum so that they hook they way they should for maximum safety. Thank you

I went to the warehouse to take a look at the safety chain hooks on Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 41946 and they measured about 1 inch wide and about 3/4 inches thick at its widest point. I took a look at a number of them and there was some slight variance in the thickness so it is highly likely yours is not exactly that width.
It is not absolutely necessary for the spring latch (the catch) to snap shut because in the unlikely event the safety chains come into play the latch really isn't going to be what keeps the chain connected to the trailer, the force of the chains on the hitch are. So if your chains have a latch, of if you were to use the Curt S-Hook with Wire Keeper for Safety Chains and Cables # C81820 (which has a 3/4 inch opening) and its keeper did not snap shut it would be safe even if the keeper did not totally shut.
The Curt hook is rated for 5,000 lbs so using two of these would be enough for your 10,000 lb rated dump trailer.
