Will LED Running Lights on Trailer Keep from Pulling Enough Power for an Observation Camera

Published 12/07/2018

Question:

Observation camera is tied into running lights on a 2017 KZ Toy Hauler...if trailer has LED running lights, would this prevent less voltage reaching the camera preventing it from connecting? Tow vehicle is a 2014 Toyota Tundra.

The only way that would be the case is if the wiring for the LED lights on your 2017 KZ Toy Hauler was a smaller gauge than normal, but even then it would cause fuses to blow or some wiring damage and your lights wouldn't work correctly.

If you have an observation system like the Furrion # FOS43TASF then you should be able to easily determine if the running lights are the issue or not. If you turn your running lights on with your 2014 Toyota Tundra and the camera isn't powering up then the camera is either malfunctioning or it is only connected to the reverse light circuit (which is common on pre-wired trailers). Try throwing your Tundra in reverse to see if the camera starts to power up.
