Take a look at the video I attached of the Yakima roof rack system being installed on a 2013 Mazda 5. About 20 seconds in you see the installer remove the black covers along the strips on the roof. Under these covers are mounting points for the roof rack to fasten to.
The Yakima system that fits your 2017 Mazda and is similar to the system in the video consists of the 48 inch round bars # Y00408, SkyLine towers # Y53TR, adapters # Y03536, and landing pads # Y00248. This is my favoite system because I really like how the round bars look.
