Hitch Ball Installation on Equal-I-zer Weight Distribution System
Updated 07/25/2018 | Published 07/23/2018 >
Question:
I just ordered an equalizer 10k weight distribution hitch. The instructions require a torque wrench rated at 320 lbs/ft for the shank bolts and 430 lbs/ft for the hitch ball. I have a torque wrench rated to 150 lbs/ft, plus I have an impact driver rated up to 1200 lbs/ft. Can I use the impact driver to install the hitch? How is this normally done? Thanks

To install the hitch ball on your weight distribution system # EQ37100ET or any ball mount, the torque required is significant. There is a really expensive torque wrench that we use for installations so it can be precise, but most installations are not to that precision level when done by other shops or individuals.
I haven't heard of using an impact driver, but it sounds that that may end up being too much power. Most people end up using a long length of pipe to get the leverage needed to make the washer sit flat using a wrench or breaker bar. The washer on the bottom sitting flat is the most common indicator that the ball has been tightened enough for safe travel.
