Can a Heavier Leaf Spring Be Used on a Tandem Axle Trailer with Lippert Axles
Updated 07/04/2018 | Published 07/03/2018 >
Question:
Hi, I have a 2016 43foot 5th wheel RV with tandem lippert 7k lb axles. I was wondering if I can upgrade to heavier leaf springs after reading some horror stories about lippert springs flattening out and or breaking? If so, how much heavier can I go and what measurements do I need? Thanks

Generally speaking, the leaf springs will need to match the weight capacity of the axle. You can go with a heavier leaf spring like you mentioned but please keep in mind that this will not increase your gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and it will make the ride stiffer.
In order to select the correct replacement leaf springs for your trailer you will need to measure the leaf spring you have now from the center of each eye while there is no tension on it if they are double eye or from the center of the eye to the top of the knuckle if you have slipper springs. Please keep in mind that a leaf spring will elongate over time so a worn spring that now measures 26" eye to eye may have actually been a 25-1/4".
I have attached a list of our leaf spring selection for you which you can search through once you find out what length you need.
