Question:
hello, I like the simple look of this adapter. I was surprised when I pulled out my factory round european trailer plug from behind the R tail light, mine has seven pins, all male pins, not three females in the middle. There are also 2 other wires there that have covers on the spade connecters from the factory. Any ideas?

Trailer Connector Adapter # 118710 is an odd duck but not as odd as what you have on your 1997 Land Rover Discovery! Actually, it isn't that odd. It is a 7-Way round pin, but I wasn't expecting it to be on that particular vehicle. The design of it though is unique.
First, make sure it is active by testing those pins using a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 or a meter if you have one. If you have power with the various vehicle lights on, then you will need adapter # PK12742 to go from a 7-Pole round to a 4-Way flat.
There is also a 7-Pole round to 7-Way blade, # HM47425. Either of these adapters may need modification though since the design of your connector may not allow the adapter plugs to seat all the way.
Those 2 separate wires you mentioned are likely for 12-volt power and another function such as auxiliary power, reverse lights, or electric brakes. If the trailer does not require those things, then there is nothing you have to do with them. If the trailer does require those things (and the functions are not active in your round connector) they will need to be hardwired in. But you would have to verify that they are tied into that round connector. If they are not then I am not sure what they are for.
