Do Trailer Brake Drums Push the Tires and Wheels Out Further Compared to Idler Hubs

Question:
I have a standard Dexter 3500 Axle that came with the stock hubs and no brakes. I was considering a switch to a set up with these 10inch brakes. Question, does the brake/hub/drum combo change the distance of the wheels? Does it push the wheels outward 2inch or is it the equivalent of the stock idler hubs since the brake mount is set back on the axle? Thanks

Expert Reply:
Hub and drum assemblies won't push the tires out further than they are with idler hubs so no worries there. The first thing you will need to check is if your axle has brake mounting flanges on each side. For an example of what this looks like take a look at spindle # TRU74FR. The square plate on there is the brake mounting flange.
If your trailer does not have those then they would need to be welded on, # 4-35 for 1, by a professional with experience in welding on brake flanges because it is a precision job that requires a special jig to do right.
We have a helpful guide on adding electric drum brakes to a trailer which I have linked for you. It is comprehensive so it covers all the parts needed.
