Question:
I want to put an much wider tire on my trailer so I can go on grass without leaving ruts. I currently have 5.30-12 tires on 4” rims with section width of 5.5” I want to put 205/65-10 tires on 6” rims with a section width of 8.3” What I need to know to make the decision is the wheel offset … or distance between the wheel mount center to the outside of the tire. It looks like I have a couple of inches between the existing tire and the frame, so I am trying to determine whether I can put these on or not. I don’t think I can count on the extra width being exactly half of the overall added width 8.3-5.5=2.8”/2=1.9”. The precise way would be to know the distance from the rim center to the outside of the tire. Then I could measure from the axle hub mount to the trailer frame. Is this something that etrailer can tell me in advance? Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10inch White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range B Item # AM3H350

Expert Reply:
Trailer wheels like the # AM3H350 that you referenced have a zero offset which means the mounting flange of the wheel is exactly in the middle of the wheel. That means the backspacing of this would be 4.15 inches since this tire has a section width of 8.3 inches.
So you'd need 4.15 inches of clearance between the hub face on your axle and the frame of the trailer.
