will the controller light up without trailer plugged in and power turned on with motor running

Curt TriFlex Trailer Brake Controller # C24VV will light up with no trailer connected and the vehicle on. There will be a single dot with no trailer connected. You can see the various things the brake controller can display in the instructions which I have linked for you.
