Question:

i have a mazda 5, and am wondering if you can tell me which rack might work/fit better on my car. i am thinking of having a hitch installed, but it will only take a 1 1/4 inch class 1. i was really interested in a 4 bike rack, but because of the class 1 tongue weight restriction, it looks like i am very limited in what i can use for a hitch mounted bike rack. my car is pretty new, so i dont want a trunk mount. looking at the kuat and the thule roadway, they look similar so i am leaning towards the thule because its much cheaper. the kuat is lighter, but both say 2 bikes so i dont see that as an issue unless im missing something. i too much difference other than the pricetag. are they both very secure? or do you recommend something else? if so, i would also want tilting ability and ability to lock to the hitch. is there a particular hitch brand that is better with either of these racks or does it not matter?

The main difference between the two racks is the weight differential, as you mentioned. The Kuat # B202-114 Beta bike rack has a slightly higher weight capacity, 80 lbs versus the 70 lb capacity of the Thule Roadway.

Both racks have anti-wobble systems, the Thule rack uses a threaded hitch pin that snugs the shank of the rack tightly against the side of the receiver, while the Kuat rack uses a standard hitch pin, along with a knob that is used to tighten the rack/receiver connection.

I would go with the Kuat rack. The lighter weight, greater capacity and easier to use anti-wobble system would make it my choice.

With either rack, I would recommend the optional lock to secure the rack to the receiver. For the Kuat, use part # HL1, for the Thule, use # THSTL2.

If you are planning on carrying a bike with a sharply sloped top tube like a womens bike, you should also consider a frame adapter like part # TH982XT. The adapter would span the distance between the seat post and the handlebar gooseneck, and would provide a level attachment point so that the bike would not be carried at an angle.
