Question:

In 2011 i purchased the Reese RP66022 wdh. For my casita ld trailer. Im being told now by other trailer owners that this hitch is to stiff for my trailer. My tongue wieght is 590 lbs and my tv carries 200 lbs of gear behind the axle. Ive had no problems but wonder besides a stiff ride what problems this unit could cause. Suggestions?? Thanks

The Reese Weight Distribution # RP66022 that you currently have actually isn't too stiff for your application.

If your loaded Tongue Weight (TW) is 590 lbs and you have 200 lbs of gear behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle then that means you need a system with a TW range that your 790 lbs (of what we call Total Tongue Weight) falls in the middle of. Since the Kit # RP66022 has a TW range of 600 lbs - 1,200 lbs you are actually right where you need to be. Keep in mind that the TW of your trailer should be 10-15% of the loaded weight of the trailer.

Unless you already have a sway control system in place, like part # 83660, then you may be interested in adding one to help fight crosswinds and wind from passing vehicles that causes your trailer to sway. The only problem with using this kit is that it does not allow you to backup while it is installed.

If you would like a system that has integrated sway control that will also allow you to backup then I recommend looking at the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA94-00-1000 it has a TW range of 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs so it will still work for your application. It doesn't come with a hitch ball but you can add one using part # A-90 for a 2" hitch ball or part # 63840 for a 2-5/16" hitch ball.

Using a thin walled socket like part # EQ70-00-4800 will help to make installing the hitch ball much easier.
