Magnetic switches such as the Lippert Components Kwikee Step Switch Magnet # LC369299 operate by their magnetic fields interacting. This does not absolutely require direct contact between the two parts of the switch but it does require they be close enough together for their magnetic fields to interact.
Permanent magnets can lose some of their strength over time so it is possible that as such a component ages it could become less able to deliver the required magnetic field to the other half of the switch. A gap of a few millimeters should not be an issue but if we are taking about a quarter-inch or more than one of the magnets may need a small shim to bring it closer to the other.
The magnetic force also depends on the security of the wiring for magnet. Make sure the wired portion of the switch has a solid electrical connection to the RV.
