Question:
How to distinguish between agriculture hub and utility trailer hub

Agricultural hubs, such as the Dexter # 42660UC1, are designed specifically to fit agricultural applications and certain spindle models. These types of hubs are typically used in building or repairing implement wagons, carts or machinery. The spindles that these hubs are designed for are also built for very low speed applications (usually around 20 mph), so the listed weight capacity on these hubs are only rated for these lower speeds.
Standard hubs are much more common and what you would typically see on utility trailers and most other trailer applications.
In order to pick out replacement hub assemblies for your trailer, you will first want to pull the hub and look for the bearing numbers. These should be stamped onto the bearings themselves. If you cannot locate the numbers, you can also measure the spindle at various locations where the bearings sit. I have attached an image that shows where you will take these measurements. I recommend using a digital caliper like # PTW80157, as the measurements will need to be exact.
Once you have this information, you will also want to make sure you choose a hub assembly with a matching bolt pattern to your existing set. I have included an article that explains how to measure your bolt pattern. You should also note the axle capacity on your trailer to ensure you choose a hub assembly that is properly rated.
For example, the etrailer.com Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K uses the # L68149 inner bearing, # L44649 outer bearing and is designed for 3,500 pound axles. It features a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.
I have attached a link that will take you to our available selection of hub assemblies, along with a couple of articles that you might find helpful.
