A 5/8" diameter hitch pin is usually made of steel, though some have coatings applied to help resist corrosion.
For example, the Master Lock Pivot Lock Hitch Pin for 2" Hitches # ML1465DAT is made of stainless steel, but there is also a version - the Master Lock Pivot Lock Hitch Pin for 2" Hitches # ML1495DAT - which is a chrome-plated steel hitch pin with a chrome-plated aluminum barrel.
