I went out to the warehouse to look at the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver # 31108 referenced in your question. I measured a total width of 35 inches at its widest point, where the mounting brackets angle outward. The crosstube itself measures 28-1/2 inches wide.
If you have the 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 HD Series, this front mount hitch is confirmed to fit and will work well. It will provide a 2 inch receiver opening and a vertical load capacity of 500 pounds. I have included the installation details for you to check out.
If you instead have the Sierra 1500 LD, you will want the Curt Front Mount Trailer Hitch # 31302.
