How To Choose The Best Brakes For 3,500 Lb. Trailer Axle

Question:

I measured both the internal and external spindles diameters. Internal is 4 3/8 inch and external is 3 3/8. The internal bearing part number is L68149. Was not able to read external bearing part number. What breaking system should I purchase?

According to the inner bearing number you have provided, it appears to me that you have a 3,500 lb axle using a #84 spindle.

You have three different options to choose from for trailer brakes. You can use surge drum, surge disc or electric drum brakes. The most popular of which are electric drum brakes as they are much more cost efficient and easier to install however, if you wish to install brakes with a much greater stopping power, I recommend using a disc brake setup.

For an electric drum brake assembly, I recommend using the Electric Trailer Brake Kit part # AKEBRK-35-SA as these are self-adjusting therefore, you will not have to adjust the brake adjuster screw every few hundred miles. You will also need a brake controller if you do not already have one such as the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 part # 90195. For a disc brake assembly, I recommend the Titan Disc Brake Kit and Leverlock Actuator w/ Electric Lockout part # T4843300 for single axles. This includes everything you will need in order to install disc brakes on your trailer if you already have brake mounting flanges.
