Difference Between 2-1/2 inch Hitch and 2-5/16 inch Hitch Ball

Question:

will a 2 5/16 ball work with what is called a 2 1/2inch hitch? 2.5inch seems like bit of an an oddball size- Im thinking slightly smaller ball should be okay? Thanks

I think you may have a couple things confused but that's pretty easy to do so I don't blame you.

A 2-1/2 inch hitch is a hitch with a square opening that measures 2-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch like what you see in the picture I attached.

2-5/16 inch refers to the diameter of a hitch ball that installs in a ball mount which then installs in the hitch. The part # EBMK25318 is a ball mount that installs in a 2-1/2 inch hitch and comes with a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball. Based on what you mentioned I believe this will be your best option.
